An editor works closely with authors to develop, enliven, and perfect their books. Editing improves awkward sentences, wordiness, and weak word choices; it focuses on the theme, the characters, and the story line itself. It also may involve recommending rewrites to parts of the story that need strengthening. Published authors often learn to revise their own work to a great extent, yet a good editor may still find ways to improve the form and content of their work.

Editing for grammar, usage, spelling, punctuation, and other mechanics of style; checking for consistency of mechanics and for internal consistency of facts
Proofreading
Detection and correction of any obvious errors in the manuscript
Substantive/Developmental Editing
Clarifying or reorganizing a manuscript for content and structure, clarifying meaning, eliminating jargon, and other non-mechanical editing.
This may include suggestions to the author for rewriting and reorganization of text.
