Many thanks to SE Gilchrist who had the (ahem) arduous task of interviewing him. (Someone has to do the hard work!)
Welcome, Volkar and SE.
Who are you?
(head high, gaze steady and yet there is no boast in his voice) I am Volkar El Barid, last surviving son of Ambassador Barid, a distant cousin to our late king and until recently I was wanted for treason against my race, the Darkons.
Tell us about your family?
My youngest brother Fionan was killed early in our war with the Relics and after the retro virus hit our planets, my mother passed on. My father is a high lord serving on the Darkon Council. He was friend to our now dead king, El Rajan and remains loyal to the old Traditionalist way of life. My other brother, Nen, is missing and believed to be KIA.
Are you the hero of your own story?
(scoffs) Of course. Who else would be the hero?
What is your problem in the story?
(Gives a slow smile and lifts his left eyebrow) I must obtain evidence to clear my name so I can spit in the faces of those who turned from me when I was charged with treason. Then I would return to my life as a smuggler on the Outer Edge. There is one obstacle; a female from Earth with the most intriguing dots across her nose. (his smile deepens, his dimple shows and he half closes his eyes reliving a pleasing memory)
Do you have a problem that wasn’t mentioned in the story?
(steeples his fingers and stares at them) My brother, Fionan was ever a joyful soul and followed wherever I led. Fionan was under my command when he fell – a fact my father had difficulty in reconciling. As did I, for I was reckless and careless without thought for others. His passing left a great loss in my life and his memory visits me in my dreams.
How do your friends see you?
(shrugs) I have no interest in how they perceive me. They should never have believed I was capable of treason. My men, however, follow me with blind allegiance. (crosses his arms across his chest and stares down his crooked nose) That should indicate my character.
How do your enemies see you?
They fear me and with good reason for I will see them humiliated and cast down for what they did to me. (he bares his teeth and an icy prickle passes over my skin)
What do you think of yourself?
I see myself as an ordinary warrior, no great hero and one who until recently was consumed with selfish desires. But when I am with my heart, Carly, I believe I could do anything, be anyone to keep her safe and bring happiness into her life. (glances away and a gentle smile curves those gorgeous lips of his)
Does anything irritate you?
Affirmative. My hair, the way it flops into my eyes no matter what I do. However, my mate finds it most fascinating if the number of times she sighs and runs her fingers through it are any indication. (Leans back, stretches his legs across the room and looks smug).
Have you ever betrayed anyone?
I would be lying if I said negative. However, the mission was important to me – I needed that evidence. What did it matter if one small Earth female was misled as to my intentions? (smile fades and an earnest expression fills his face) She taught me the error of my ways.
Do you keep your promises?
Always. A Darkon warrior maintains some sense of honour no matter how low he falls.
Are you lucky?
Very. I take risks but they are calculated. I like to win.
Have you ever had an adventure?
(snorts) My life IS an adventure.
If you had the power to change one thing in the world that didn’t affect you personally, what would it be?
I would turn back time and stop the real traitor from unleashing the retro virus. Then so many, many of our races in the Seven Galaxies would still live.
How do you envision your future?
Once the war is over, I will take my mate and explore new worlds and cultures. Ahh, the adventures we will share. (Smiling, he rises to his feet, his hand envelops mine and a tingle races up my arm. He grins and departs.)
BLURB FOR STAR PIRATE’S JUSTICE: Carly has one focus in her life: to return home to her terminally ill younger sister. When she learns that a Darkon traitor possesses gateway maps to Earth, she uses all her skills to track him down. But capturing the charming star pirate turns out to be trickier than she anticipated…
Volkar is determined to prove his innocence to those who drove him to a life lived on the Outer Rim, and he will overcome anyone who gets in his way. But his surprisingly sweet captor has some skills that will come in handy, so he strikes a deal: the maps for her help. Neither expect their partnership to turn into more, but as dark secrets are revealed, their lives become forfeit — and the relationship blossoming between them nothing but a starburst of happiness in the deep shadow of the sky…
